It seems like anywhere you go, now a days, you see horoscopes. The other day I was in the grocery store and I was waiting for a clerk. And as I was waiting I was just scanning the magazines, and saw a magazine that was all about horoscopes. And it got me thinking, you see horoscopes in newspapers, magazines, websites, they're just, they're everywhere. And a lot of times people think of horoscopes as simply entertainment. But are horoscopes entertainment? Or are they something so much more? Well that's what we are going to look at today, in this article.

Definition of Horoscopes and Astrology

So as I was doing research, I have found a bunch of different definitions of horoscopes. Basically Webster's dictionary definition say's it's an astrological forecast. Basically they use the position of the planets and the signs of the zodiac (which is your birthday) to infer individual and personality traits in foretelling events of a person's life. So basically they are predicting what's going to happen in your life. And how many of us want to know that? You know, we want to know who are we going to marry? What job should I take? Where should I move? And so many times horoscopes connect with that part of us, that just wants to know the future so badly. And that desperateness to know the future sometimes leads us to horoscopes. Sometimes it's just something we do for fun, we look in the newspaper or magazine and we go hey, look what my horoscope said, ha ha ha. Or oh my goodness this is kind of, actually coming true a little bit in my life. And you might just think it quirky, you might not really put a lot of weight into it.

But my question is are horoscopes and astrology is it merely entertainment, or is it something much deeper?

And I found it interesting that the word astrology, it's a Greek word, that means science of the stars. And it says that astrology was used by the Chaldeans as early as 3000 B.C.. So three thousand years before Christ. And then the people of China, later became interested, and they began practicing astrology. And it's a form of fortune telling, which the Bible considers an occult. Astrology is based upon the use of stars or planets to read into a persons past, present and future. The philosophy of astrology is therefore based on an occult worldview. And it asserts: as above, so below. And according to this worldview, everything in this universe is one, and is connected. Therefore the pattern of the planets reflect our lives on earth.

So what is the occult, anyways?

Well, the dictionary.com says it's of or pertaining to magic, astrology, or any system claiming use or knowledge of secret or supernatural powers or agencies. It's secret; disclosed or communicated only to the initiated. Hidden from view.

Most astrologers are involved in other forms of occultism, and new age practices. Such as tarot cards, numerology, belief in reincarnation, having spirit guides, eastern meditation practices and so forth. Thus reading horoscopes, I believe, is not just entertainment, it's something so much more. It's opening yourself to the spirit realm in which Satan resides. It may seem like a harmless thing because it's packaged in a trendy magazine; and all your friends are reading it; and it just takes a couple of seconds to read it, and then you go on throughout your day. Seems harmless, right? But basically what you're allowing, is that you're opening the gates of your mind to this type of philosophy. To the messages contained within. And eventually, if you start seeing a pattern, or you start seeing something that might you know seem like it's coming true, or it seems like, oh yeah that does fit for me. Little by little, you might start to be deceived, into believing that these horoscopes are truth, instead of the Bible as truth. It can become such a gradual thing.

Gradual compromise

And I always like to think of that illustration of the frog in the cooking pot. You know, you put a frog in there, if the water's cool and you gradually warm up the water, guess what, the frog will not jump out. Because it doesn't realize what's happening. And just in the same way, if we put ourselves in that position, to be influenced by the world, whether it's through horoscopes or magazines or Internet, T.V., video games, movies, anything. I mean as we open ourselves up, by that philosophy of the world, and a worldview that is opposite to God, and opposite to a biblical worldview, and to Jesus. Then gradually, Satan could begin to turn up the heat on the water in our pot, so to speak. And over time, he could get us to compromise in our beliefs. And so I believe that we need to be guarding our hearts and guarding our minds. Proverbs 4:23 says: Guard your heart, above all else, for it is the wellspring of life. And so we need to be guarding our hearts, guarding our minds. And I believe that even means with reading horoscopes.

So what does the Bible have to say about astrology and horoscopes?

Well I believe that if you are a follower of Jesus Christ, that you need to know what the Bible says on topics that are important to you. You need to know, and you need to look, and research it for yourself. You need to know that it's not just my opinion, this is not just Shelley Hitz saying this; that this is what God is saying through His Word. And so I just chose a couple different Scriptures that I'm going to share with you now. I encourage you to go and research even more, to look this stuff up, to find out for yourself what you believe.

But let me share with you a few Scriptures that I found. Let's start with Deuteronomy 18:10-14, it says: Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do so.

Here's another Scripture in 2 Kings 17:17, it says: Then they made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, and practiced divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him.

Isaiah 47:13 says: "All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you. Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. Here are no coals to warm anyone; here is no fire to sit by."

2 Kings 21:6 says: "Manasseh even sacrificed his own son in the fire. And this was one of the kings of Israel. It says: He practices sorcery and divination, and he consulted with mediums and psychics. He did much that was evil in the Lord's sight, arousing his anger."

Then Deuteronomy 4:19 says: "And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars-all the heavenly array-do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. Did you hear that? It says, do not be enticed into bowing down to the moon, the stars, and worshiping them. And I believe that is basically what astrology is doing. It's looking at the stars and the alignment of the stars and it's worshiping that.

And Exodus 20:3 is very clear. It's the first of the ten commandments. It says: "Do not worship any other gods besides me." And that is God the Father of the Bible, and His son Jesus Christ. "Do not worship any other gods besides me."

And Romans 1:25 it says: They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator. And it's so subtle, it's so easy to begin worshiping created things. Whether it's the stars, and the sun and the moon, or whether it's people, or whether it's money, or whether it's stuff. You know it's so easy to begin to do that. Because it's the stuff we see.

And then Acts 16:16-18 brings out a good point. It's a story, and it talks about how the disciples actually drove out a demon of fortune telling. So that there tells you that is opposite of what God has for us. But let me read it to you. It is Acts 16:16-18 it says: Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved." She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her. So just another example of how this, fortune telling, and astrology, and the, you know, horoscopes is, you know, can be connected with the spirit. From Satan from the Enemy, and it was just shown in this story from Paul.

So as we close, I want to ask you. Where do you get your wisdom? Where do you get insight?

Where do you get the things that you need to know for your future? Are you looking to horoscopes, even just if it's for fun? Or just, you know, just because it's there, that you read it? Or are you really starting to believe it? Are you looking to things like that? Or are you looking to God alone? Because I want you to know today, that God is real. That He is able to help you make decisions, He is able to guide you, He is able to give you wisdom. And He is able to speak to you today in your heart, He is able to speak to you through dreams and visions, and He is alive and well. And the power that comes through Christianity comes through Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, and God the Father.

I want to encourage you to put your trust in God.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. And then James 1:5 says: If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. I believe that God has that wisdom for you. He wants to give it to you. He might not give you specifics, but he will be the lamp unto your feet and the light unto your path. He will show you what step to take next, and he will lead you and guide you. I encourage you to put your trust in the God of the Bible, and in Jesus Christ. And He will not let you down.

The history of astrological development is as foggy as the history of mankind.
